Stars :Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.
Director :Marc Webb.
After reading a lot about 500 Days of Summer I finally saw it on Friday .Its considered as one of the best movies of 2009 by a lot of people and I have to say I don't think so.
Tom Hansen(Joseph Gordon-Levitt)is a young man working in a card company as one of the writers meets Summer Finn(Zooey Deschanel)a beautiful girl from a broken home and no faith in love.Tom is in love with Summer but Summer does not believes in love and after nearly 10 months of going out she decides its time to break-up.Tom is in shambles but gets to meet Summer again after almost 3-4 months ,he notices a ring on Summer's finger and after knowing Summer is engaged he takes into alcohol and quits his job. After sometime he realizes its not worth it and starts a fresh .Finally meets someone new and gets a new job.
The story line is simple but the narrative style is brilliant. The performances are great specially by Joseph ,I think he is kinda of getting used to playing the sorry shattered characters. He looks great and performances brilliantly.Zoey Deschanel she is a marvelous woman.I may be a bit partial towards her but she is an amazing actress. She looks extremely beautiful and when she is sad in the movie her eyes reflect her pain. She does a great job as Summer and actually with her innocent face and sweet voice she enhances the persona of Summer ,I think much better than the director Marc Webb might have thought.Chloë Moretz as Rachel Hansen, Tom's sister does an exceptional job ,she looks really confident and in control during her small part.
The music is another beautiful aspect of the movie. The direction and narrative are the two main factors that stand-out for me.Marc is able to bring out all the emotion from his actors and is able to give some beautiful moments of love .The moments in the Ikea store and when Summer reveals her life in front of Tom are really beautiful moments.
The movement of the movie from flashback to the present and back was really interesting and same was with two frames in one when thoughts and reality were shown.
The basic strength of a romantic movie has to be story ,dialogues and the screenplay.Except the screenplay the movie I felt lacked in the other two departments.I never could get the vibe or feel connected to any of the characters .If it wasn't a love story then also I could not get along the flow of the movie. It was hard to really feel anything except a sporadic glimpse of what the movie could have been with a much better script.
Not an exceptional movie ,neither worth the way its overrated not its a bad one.Its an average flick with some good direction decent performance without a solid script.
Plus :Excellent direction ,Brilliant narration ,some decent performance and Zoey Deschanel
Minus :A not so good script.
