Will you be willing to kill for the life of your dreams ? A thriller based on one man's obsession for being somebody is what 'The Talented Mr. Ripley is all about.
Tom Ripley is a struggling young man ,a nobody trying to make a life .He is seen playing piano in a borrowed Princeton jacket by Hearth Greenleaf a wealthy business man who believes Tom is actually a Princeton pass out.He offers Tom to go to Italy and persuade his son Dickie Greenleaf to return back to New York . Tom accepts the offer and travels to meet Dickie who he has never met before. He befriends Dickie and his girlfriend Marge and starts living with them.Dickie develops a liking for Tom and they become great buddies.Tom is dazzled by Dickie's lifestyle and wishes to be like him.He travels to Rome with Dickie and meets Freddie a friend of Dickie.Dickie starts to spend his time with Freddie and Tom starts feeling ignored. One day Dickie is able to make Tom speak all the truth about Princeton and Tom tells him the truth .Dickie starts to ignore Tom and on a boat trip tells Tom that he doesn't want him anymore and wants him to leave. He starts insulting Tom and in a rage Tom kills Dickie .Tom then sinks the boat and assumes Dickie's identity .The journey to hide the murder and what happens during the course is what the movie is all about.
The performances are superb.Matt as Tom is really good,he makes you feel pity for the character of Tom and then hate him for murdering so many.He comes across as the shy and insecure nobody who is just trying to be someone. He really pulls off the character well.He keeps it subtle and really cold and I feel that's what he was supposed to do .He isn't likable but yeah I did feel for his character's misery specially in the end.Dickie on the other hand is a flamboyant rich kid and Jude law does full justice to his character. He is handsome ,easily catches your attention and draws admiration .Jude law brings that charm to the character that makes the girls go weak in the knees.Gwyneth as Marge is brilliant even though she has a really complex character. She brings out her character's emotions brilliantly on the screen.I could feel the love , joy of her character and develop an instant liking to her.Her emotional outburst in the end is also a fine example of her acting powers.Hoffman is good as always ,in his small role as Freddie I could always feel the tension when ever he is in the frame with Tom.Cate is also good with her small part .The stand out performance for me were from Jude Law and Matt Damon.
The overall script is good and screenplay is decent ,I like the camerawork a lot.The beauty of the places have been captured real well specially the scenes at the ocean and in the city .The movie does suffers from the lack of pace in the middle part and the part after Tom assumes Dickie's identity is dragged a bit.But still I felt the movie was well scripted and presented as a whole. Some of the dialogues were really well written .
The movie is a watchable one and certainly a better thriller than a lot.But yes I was confused a bit about the feelings of Tom for Dickie ,was it friendship or his love for him.The movie did put up a question ,How far one can go to live a life of dreams ? I don't know if Tom was right when he said "It's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody ".
Plus :Overall a decent thriller,Matt Damon Jude law and Gwyneth Paltrow's performances.
Minus :A bit stretched and lack pace at some places.
