Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Directed By: Quentin Tarantino
Written By: Quentin Tarantino
Though the odd name itself was enough and Quentin Tarantino was like icing on the cake but day I heard Lieutenant Aldo Raine in the very first trailer I saw telling his men that each one of them owed him 100 Nazi scalps I was restless to get my hands on Inglorious Basterds.
Like every Tarantino movie, Inglourious Basterds (IB) had chapters, sub-plots and each one was better than the previous. The first sub plot is about a team of American Jews assembled by U.S.A into Nazi Occupied France. The team is commanded by Lieuenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) and its purpose is not just kill Nazi's but to spread fear into the hearts of each and every Nazi who sees their victim or hears from him and for this they are bestowed with a name "The Basterds" by the Nazi army. The second one is an US operation KINO to eradicate the Nazi leadership in Nazi occupied France. The third one of a Jewish girl Shosansa's plan to avenge her family's murder which was shot dead by Colonel Hans Landa and his men during one of their hunt for Jews. A German movie about a soldier's heroics is scheduled for premier at her theater which was to be attended by the top brass of theThird Reich including the Furher Adolph Hitler and here is where operation KINO, The Basterds and Shosanna's revenge all come together . Its better if we watch the movie than me writing the story here coz the story is one of the hero's of this movie.
Colonel Hans Landa played by Christoph Waltz is an amazing character, of what I have read and seen about the Nazi S.S it was one of the most resembling Nazi character I have seen on the screen. The smile, sugar coated words before the assault, the ascent, cruel and evil mind were all present and Christoph looked every bit an S.S colonel. Christoph Waltz has given a brilliant performance and rightfully won an Oscar award as the best actor in a supporting role(male). Melanie Laurent as Shosanna Dreyfus is able to live through the pain and anger of a victim of Nazi atrocities. Her performance is highly commendable specially her performance during the conversation with Landa at the Cafe. Her eyes were very expressive and she subdues her hate while talking to him. I had to admire the guts of her character. These were two outstanding performances among a group of high calibre performers. Brad Pitt is good as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the coolest character in the movie. His weired ascent , that long scar on the neck and had the coolest and probably the best lines in the movie. Each character has enormously contributed to making this movie a brilliant one. Whether its the character of Sergeant Hugo Stiglitz ( Til Schweiger ), Private Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl ) or even the character of Adolph Hitler (Martin Wuttke), each one was brought alive by the spirited and commendable performance of the actors.
Quentin Tarantino I felt must have spent a long time in developing his characters, giving each one a specific look, a specific ascent and purpose. The story is a fictional so he has taken some liberties and a few of them are surprising but just too good. His direction as always leaves a mark and his use of background score has been spot on. The way a scene's impact can be increased by the use of background score is very much visible when Hans Landa arrives at Shosanna's table in the second chapter. As in each of his movies he does not hesitates to use blood and violence for elaborating and adding to the emotions and purpose of his characters and plot.
Quentin Tarantino is a name synonymous with fast paced and high on adrenaline movies that have gained cult status, delivers one of his best with Inglourious Basterds. A superb movie which kept me glued to my seat during its running time. All I could say after the movie was WOW!.
Plus : Story and performances.
Minus : Didn't got the time notice any.
Rating : 9/10
